Support for Cross Domain Canonicalization is welcomed by SEO India Company, Profit By Search and all SEO Professionals across the world, This would be of immense benefit to:

  1. Shared Windows Hosting websites, where there is no support for 301 redirects
  2. Non technical webmasters
  3. Webmasters who want to let visitor come to a page which might be better in terms of usability & design but wants google crawler to view the same page…

This is what google mentioned on http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394:

Can rel=”canonical” be used to suggest a canonical url on a completely different domain?

There are situations where it’s not easily possible to set up redirects. This could be the case when you need to migrate to a new domain name using a web server that cannot create server-side redirects. In this case, you can use the rel=”canonical” link element to specify the exact URL of the domain preferred for indexing. While the rel=”canonical” link element is seen as a hint and not an absolute directive, we do try to follow it where possible.

Yahoo & Bing will to follow the same soon, for more details Contact us..
